Employee Story - Will's story at Everything Digital

Will’s Story

Just 20 years ago, in 2002, an estimated of only 49% of households in the UK had home computers, compared with an estimated 88% in 2018. With this huge rise in the ability to connect with people that live across the country, many people have seen an opportunity to create businesses online, with one of the major forms of this been creating eCommerce stores.

I learned the value of hard work by working hard.

In April of this year (2022) I started working for Everything Digital, a company that strives to make the ambitions of people looking to take advantage of this new age of business. In this article, I will take you through my Digital Marketing journey and explain what it’s really like working in eCommerce at 18.

Starting Out In eCommerce

When starting at Everything Digital, I had very little prior experience working in eCommerce, or any form of marketing at all. This posed the challenge of having to become proficient in an entirely new subject. However, this also presented the opportunity to learn from people who have been working in the industry. This has allowed me to learn a skill set and how said skill set should be effectively applied in the real world.

What I’ve Learnt

At first, the thought of starting work in an industry I had no prior experience in sounded daunting, especially at such a young age and with the fact that Everything Digital is my first office job. Without the correct guidance, it would have been.

I began by learning the basics of META Pixel, Google Tag Manager, and Google Analytics. The building blocks when it comes to tracking and gathering data on how users interact with an eCommerce website. After this, I learnt how to optimise product feeds by using best practice techniques recommended by Google, as well as some tips given to me by my colleagues. Currently, I’m learning about Google Search, Display, and Shopping ads and how to best set up marketing campaigns for Google. By learning in this order, I’ve had the opportunity to ensure that I have a thorough understanding of the work I’m doing and have the foundations to be able to create campaigns to a high level in the future.

What I Plan To Learn Next

In the future, there are many aspects of digital marketing I have yet to explore. For example, I plan to research META’s conversion API. A way to track a users journey through a website server side. Eliminating the need for things such as cookies, which can be blocked on most mobiles and will be gone completely by 2023. To install this into a website manually, it requires some form of technical knowledge on the use of API’s and website development. However, having the ability to set up another layer of tracking for clients wanting to advertise on Facebook will be greatly useful.

How It Will Help Me In The Future

There are many things that I have learnt so far that will help in my future. For example, I’ve been given great experience in the workspace. I’ve learnt many technical aspects of digital marketing, such as Google Tag Manager and Meta Pixel. As well as being able to get into the back end of websites to install the conversions API. These skills are a great foundation for me to pursue a career in eCommerce.

In conclusion, Everything Digital has given me the opportunity to enter a new industry with little experience, learn new skills, and set myself up for future success.
